Cross Street Village Historic Building
Award

The Ypsilanti High School located on Cross Street was built in 1915
at a cost of $122,000 and remained in use until 1973 when the current high
school was opened. The district used the old high school as a community
building until it was closed in 1995. In 1997 the school board received
proposals from multiple organizations to put the building to a new use. ACD
was ultimately selected to purchase the 160,000 square-foot building and
convert it into the 104 unit apartment complex for senior citizens now known
as Cross Street Village. Rehabilitation in excess of $10 million of costs
was completed in 2000 with the assistance of an award of LIHTCs through the
Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and an Affordable Housing
Program grant through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis. The
property has been placed on the National Register of Historic
Places. The award pictured below was presented to American Community
Developers, Inc. and Elisabeth Knibbe Architects by the Michigan Historic
Preservation Network at the Cross Street Village grand opening on May 15th,
2001.
